Celebrating Success: The Journey of the PMP Study Group
By Randi Williams and Danila Laizerowitch
In a world where collaboration and support are key to success, one shining example stands out—the PMP Study Group. What started as an informal self-forming channel of like-minded individuals aiming to achieve their Project Management Professional (PMP©) certification has blossomed into a thriving hub of learning, encouragement, and triumph.
As we reflect on the milestones of this incredible journey, it's clear that the dedication and camaraderie within the group have been instrumental in driving its success. With a remarkable growth of 66 new members joining since September 2023, the group's impact continues to expand far beyond initial expectations.
One of the most notable achievements of the PMP Study Group is the number of members who have successfully obtained their PMP certification. 8 individuals, through their perseverance and hard work, have triumphed over the challenging PMP exam, marking not only personal victories but also exemplifying the collective strength of the group.
Watching the success of the study group is what motivates me (Randi). It reminds me of the importance of giving back and why volunteering is such a critical part of the PMI model.
Central to the group's effectiveness is its commitment to fostering connections and providing support through various channels. Monthly in-person meetups offer members the opportunity to engage face-to-face, exchange insights, and bolster each other's confidence. Additionally, virtual meetups ensure inclusivity and accessibility, allowing members to participate regardless of their geographical location or scheduling constraints. And the Slack Channel serves as a vibrant hub for ongoing communication, collaboration, resource sharing and celebrating success.
Beyond the tangible outcomes of certification success, the impact of the PMP Study Group extends to a deeper level—the spirit of volunteering. PMI Northern Utah Chapter exists because of volunteers who so graciously give their time to give back to the project management community in Utah. When we started ideating around the possibilities of the group, we both saw the gap that existed and felt a call to develop a plan that would meet our community’s needs.
Volunteering serves as a testament to the transformative power of giving back. It's not merely about individual achievement but about lifting others up, contributing to a collective mission, and fostering a sense of community.
Volunteering, for me (Danila), has a special significance. Volunteering was and is the most authentic way I found to build my new community after moving to SLC. Volunteering with the PMP Study Group not only allowed me to contribute to the growth and success of aspiring project managers but also provided a meaningful avenue for personal connection and integration into the local community.
As we celebrate the accomplishments of the PMP Study Group, let it serve as a reminder of the importance of volunteering and community building in our personal and professional lives. The act of giving back enriches both the giver and the receiver, creating ripple effects of positivity and growth.
The PMP Study Group is not done growing or enhancing what is already there. We have some exciting new features coming your way. Our former candidates, now PMP-certified members, are giving back by supporting the Study Group activities. Their invaluable experience and insights are proving to be a game-changer for current candidates. We just launched the new PMP Study Guide by PMINUC, which will be available to all Chapter members. The study guide's purpose is to help candidates prepare for the test, and the content is designed to make studying easier by distilling important ideas, testimonials, and procedures into a user-friendly manual. In addition, we're also preparing to help candidates find study peers with similar exam dates, creating a supportive network where you can exchange ideas, clarify doubts, and hold each other accountable throughout your PMP journey.
As we reflect on the hard work that has gone into the creation and maintenance of the PMP Study Group, the dedication of our volunteers, and the successes we have achieved, we’re reminded success is not merely measured in certifications earned but, in the bonds, forged, the knowledge shared, and the support offered. And in a world that often values individual achievements above all else, it serves as a powerful reminder that true success is best achieved when it's shared.
